Results for 2010 race series
Race 1: Thompson St - 6km
A field of 25 runners took to the demanding Thompson St course on Sunday 14 February for our only mass start of the year. It was great to see the return of some runners who haven't exactly been regulars in recent races (that's you Rebecca, Dave M, Paul and Fraser) and a new runner (Ruth). However, even with this "new" blood Dave Vlotman and Cris Penn started their title defences strongly, beating in Paul Baker and Dave Eaton, and Rebecca Jenner and Shelley Kirkwood respectively. In the Handicap, Alison took the points from the dynamic duo - Teresa and Leigh.
Race 2: Cremorne/Spit Junction - 10km
Another good turnout for the second race of 2010 with temperatures up. Two potential upsets did not eventuate with Paul Baker catching a plane rather than show up to battle a leg weary Dave Vlotman and Rebecca Jenner taking a wrong turn. So, this saw Dave Vlotman take the points from a light footed Dave Eaton, and Laurie Coleman. Cris Penn won from Carolyn Luxford and Shelley Kirkwood. In the handicap Carolyn, Laurie and Richard took the top three places respectively.
Race 3: Chinaman’s Beach - 10.4km
A big field of 25 runners took to the streets for race three. Carolyn Luxford showed great form to take the race win from Cris Penn and Shelley Kirkwood. In the Men’s Race Dave Vlotman exerted his dominance beating in Paul Baker by 3 minutes, with Fraser comin in third. The handicap points went to Dave Madden, Robert Sandali and Carolyn for their efforts on the day.
Race 4: Beauty Pt - 13km
As the races get longer, the field gets smaller with 21 runners starting (and only 18 finishing). Never-the-less, Cris Penn, Carolyn Luxford and Teresa Liu ran well to take the points for the women. Dave Vlotman set a blistering pace to win from Paul Baker and Fraser McGunnigle. While strong running by Keith Ives, Teresa Liu and Dave Eaton saw them take the handicap points.
Race 5: Milsons Pt - 15km
As always our smallest field (and clearly our toughest runners) took on the demanding Milsons Pt course. There was a certain familiarity about the results though with Dave Vlotman leading in Paul Baker from Fraser McGunnigle in the men and Cris Penn winning the points from Carolyn Luxford and Sharon Chiong. The weather was great and despite the smaller than average turn-out, the BBQ was demolished in record time.
Race 6: Cremorne out-and-back - 10.7km
Race 7: Short Chinamans - 9.1km
Short Chinamans beach was run on a wintery day at Balmoral but with a surprisingly good turn out. This years newcomer Jessica Apfel took line honours from Cris Penn and Carolyn Luxford but this years honours went to the place getters with Cris taking the title for 2010 from Carolyn Luxford and Sharon Chiong. Dave Eaton ran strongly to beat home Fraser McGunnigle and Kelvyn Steggles. The men’s title had already been secured however by the absent Dave Vlotman from Fraser and Laurie Coleman who finished fourth on the day. Congratulations to this years winners!
