Race 1: Mild conditions, a challenging new route and several new members meant that the field for Race 1 was the largest of any race in the last 2 years. With twelve women starting in the women's field and seventeen in the men this year's competition could prove to be fierce. Even so, the results have a certain familiarity about them with Cris Penn taking line honours from Merran and Rebecca. Phil Clark once again dominated the field beating newcomer Fillipo with Dave Vlotman securing third. In the handicap, miscalculations on the day prematurely announced Dave Hawkins and Toshi as the top two (sorry guys). The official recount saw them drop from the top ten altogether with top points taken by Merran, Dave Novotny and Dave Vlotman. The BBQ was prepared by a committee and was well enjoyed by the attending hordes. Full scoring is detailed below.
Race 2: Overcast but very humid conditions greeted the runners for race 2. It was a smaller field than race 1 with just 19 starters - is it the longer distance? Lasts weeks' 6-Foot Track run had little effect on our speedier men and after "losing" Fillipo, Phil Clark again took line honours for the men ahead of Dave Vlotman and Dave Novotny. There's a real tussle among the women for 2006 with Rebecca taking this win ahead of Cris and Merran. Only two points separate these three after the first two races. Carol took handicap points from Shelley and Sharon.
Race 3: Great weather and a good turnout, and we almost started on time. A notable run because of the absence of a couple of the male speedsters. As a result Dave Vlotman was able to "cruise" to victory ahead of Keith and Laurie. Dave now has one hand on this year's title - can he keep hold? In the women's event we had the third winner in as many races with Belinda taking the win from a strong finishing Cris who passed Merran in the final stretch. However, the points go to Cris as Belinda is only visiting our club. Toshi ("the bandit") took ten points in the handicap ahead of Keith and Marcel.
Race 4: The field was a little thinner than previous races this year and although the weather was good for running the wind made it a little cool at the finish. Phil Clark took line honours from a casual Dave Vlotman (saving himself for next week's marathon) with Mr Favalla third (still in recovery mode from his gallant effort in the Comrades Marathon the previous week). Rebecca's absence took some of the competition out of the Women's category and Cris took the win from Merran and Sharon. Sharon also took handicap points from Derek and Toshi with Merran's early lead now whittled back to 2 points.
Race 5: Twenty two runners is a good field for our longest race (15.5km through Milson's Point). The results suggest that everyone is ready for the City to Surf in two weeks. Phil Clark took line honours from Dave Vlotman and Fillipo. In the women's it was dead heat with Merran and Cris finishing on exactly the same time in spite of the fact that they ran in different handicap groups. Carolyn took third. In the handicap Dave Vlotman took 10 points with Dave Novotny and Phil Worrall following.
Race 6: A beautiful, but hot, day for a run. Good performances all round with several runners backing up from last week's Sydney Running Festival. Phill Clarke again dominated with his fifth win of the year - ahead of Dave Vlotman and Dave Novotny. Cris Penn also took her fifth win of the year from Merran and Caroline. Dave Novotny has streaked to the lead by 8 points by taking 10 points in race six handicap ahead of Dave Eaton and Phil Worrall.
Race 7: A sultry day made for less than comfortable weather on our last day of the year. A small field of 18 starters meant that almost every runner made it into the points. A strong run from Merran gave her her second 10 points for the year but with Cris taking 9 points the crown remains with Cris for 2006. Caroline rounded out the top three. In the men Dave Vlotman again took the points giving him his first championship with a dominant performance in 2006 while Dave Novotny and Keith Spackman took the minor places. Marcel crowned a great year with ten handicap points ahead of Toshi and Derek. However, the handicap crown went to Dave Novotny with Merran Butler and Dave Vlotman sharing second.
