Race 1: A warm day on this difficult (read hilly) course never-the-less saw some blistering pace with the Women's winner Cris Penn, taking 30 seconds off her course record and the Men's winner Phil Clark beating the rest of the field in by 2 minutes. Merran Butler took second in the Women's from Shelly Kirkwood while Dave Vlotman and Kelvyn Steggles (also with great times) took the minor placings for the men. Kelvyn also secured the Handicap points from Derek Burke and Cris Penn.
Race 2: Overnight rain and cloud cover made for a humid day for racing. Dave Vlotman took the ten point in the Men's Category from Kelvyn Steggles and Dave Eaton. Cris Penn finished third overall taking the Women's points from Merran Butler and Carolyn Luxford. That strong run by Carolyn gave her the handicap points with Martin Fielding and Lisa Knowland following on.
Race 3: Race day saw some strong running on the new Chinamans Beach course. Dave Vlotman took line honours from Fraser and club captain Dave Eaton. Cris Penn continued her good form with a win from Merran and Carolyn Luxford. In the handicap Toshi Konishi was once again on song, pinching the points from Dave Eaton and Derrick Burke.
Race 4: Beauty Point is arguably our hardest run, a course of perpetual hills that our 19 runners felt on race day. Rain threatened but didn't fall and Dave Vlotman took line honours from Frasier and Kelvyn. Cris Penn ran strong to lead in Caroline and Merran. The handicap was taken by Derrick Burke (giving him a good 5 point buffer from other competitors) with Sharon and Laurie filling out the minor places.
Race 5: Our longest race of the year was the first in a long time with as many women running as there were men. In the women’s group Cris won from Merran and Caroline with strong runs from all. The men’s results mirrored race 4 with Dave Vlotman leading in Frasier and Kelvyn. The handicap points are now held in confidence until presentation night but leading into this race everyone was still able to secure enough points to win.
Race 6: A cool wet day for our penultimate race with a field of 19. Fraser pushed Dave Vlotman with Dave eventually gaining ground up Avenue Rd to win from Fraser and Kelvyn. Merran ran strongly to finish fifth overall, taking the women's points from Caroline and Shelly. The handicap points remain undercover but with one race to go ten runners remain in contention for a place in that division with eight of those runners capable of taking the championship trophy.
Race 7: A warm day for the last race of 2007 saw some terrific running with the race record beaten in both the Men's and Women's categories. Both Dave Vlotman and Fraser McGunnigle beat the race record (by 24 sec and 11 sec respectively) to finish first and second with Dave Eaton close behind in third. The women put in a blistering effort with both Cris and Merran smashing the women's race record (by 1:39 and 1:04 respectively) to finish first and second with Caroline Luxford taking third place. Impressively, Cris and Merran's net time placed them 4th and 5th overall in a field of 22 runners. With a fast pace and 9 of the top 10 contenders for the handicap fielding in this race a dramatic handicap result was guaranteed ... see you presentation night!
