Results for 2008 race series
Race 1: Thompson St - 6km
The first race of 2008 saw a field of 22 runner take on the shortest race of our running season. With help from some perfect running weather (cool and cloudy) a fast pace was set by Cris Penn and Dave Vlotman who lead the women's and men's fields home. Strong performances also from three runners in training for this years Canberra Marathon. Among them, Kelly Baker who took the Handicap points from Carol Coulter and Dave Hawkins.
Race 2: Cremorne/Spit Junction (Murdoch St) - 10km
A smaller field for race two with just 16 starters. Canberra Marathon training gets another mention in the handicap with Paul Baker taking the handicap points from Marcel and Shelley. Dave Vlotman lead the men home with Paul Baker hot on his heels. Fraser came in third. In the women's group, Cris had a comfortable win from Merran and Shelley.
Race 3: Chinaman's Beach (long) - 10.4km
For the second time in my memory the women outnumbered the men in one of our races with Cris Penn leading in Merran Butler and Kelly Baker. Dave Vlotman continued his winning way with Paul Baker and Fraser McGunnigle taking the places. The handicap results were delayed with the handicapper absent but the top points ended up going to Laurie Coleman, Carolyn Luxford and Dave Eaton.
Race 4: Beauty Point - 12.3km
A good day for running with 16 runners taking on this very challenging (read hilly) run. Paul Baker's training showed through with a strong win in both the Open and Handicap. Dave Vlotman and Fraser took the minor places in the open while Phil Worrall and Sharon Chiong did the same in the Handicap. In the women's event it was a familiar story with the trio of Penn, Butler and Luxford taking the top points (in that order).
Race 5: Milsons Point - 15km
A small field but an exciting finish with 15km of running coming down to 2 seconds with Paul Baker beating Dave Vlotman after a neck and neck battle the whole way. Dave Eaton took third. In the women's race Cris took the points from Caroline and Merran. Of course the handicap points go undercover from here on in so you've just got to keep running hard for the next races - mathematically, at the end of race 4 everyone remained in the running.
Race 6: Cremorne Point - 10km
Good running weather saw Paul Baker bring the men's title to even points taking the win ahead of Dave Vlotman and Fraser McGunnigle. Cris took the women's point ahead of Carolyn and Merran to strengthen her grip on her 10th open title.
Race 7: Short Chinamans - 9km
A strong field of 23 runners took on the last race for 2008. Cris Penn took the major points with Kelly Baker and Lisa Knowland taking the minor placings with strong runs. Paul Baker took the men's race (and 3:24 off the race record) to come in ahead of Dave Vlotman and Fraser.
